Ingrid Newkirk, born in England in 1949, is an animal-rights activist and co-founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She grew up in New Delhi and worked as a deputy sheriff in Maryland and the District of Columbia during the 1970s, where she dealt with animal-welfare violations. In 1980, she founded PETA with Alex Pacheco. Newkirk has published several books on animal protection and has campaigned especially against factory farming, animal experimentation, and cruelty to animals.
