Henning Sievert studied Islamic Studies and history in Kiel. He received his doctorate from the University of Bochum and completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich. He subsequently headed the Department of Islamic Studies at the Institute for Languages and Cultures of the Near East at Heidelberg University.
