Helmut W. Pesch (born 1952) studied English, art history and classical archaeology in Cologne and Glasgow. In 1981, he earned a doctorate with the first German-language scholarly study of fantasy literature. He worked as an illustrator, mapmaker, translator and author, particularly in the fantasy genre. His translations included several fantasy classics, and he also wrote novels and nonfiction books on the genre.
