J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973) was a British philologist, linguist, and writer. Born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, he studied at Oxford. After working on the Oxford English Dictionary, he taught at the universities of Leeds and Oxford, where he was ultimately Professor of English Language and Literature. Alongside his scholarly work, he wrote stories for his children, including „The Hobbit“ (1937). With „The Lord of the Rings“ and „The Silmarillion“, he created the mythical world of Middle-earth. Tolkien received the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford.
