Helmut Frielinghaus (1931–2012), born in Braunschweig, worked at the Librería Buchholz bookshop in Madrid from 1952 to 1957, where he began translating from Spanish. He subsequently worked in Germany as an editor and publishing director at Rowohlt, Claassen, and Luchterhand. As a translator, he translated works by Raymond Carver, Nicholson Baker, John Updike, and William Faulkner, collaborating with Sabine Höbel on the Updike and Faulkner translations. In 2011, he received the Paul Scheerbart Prize from the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation. His translation of Carver’s poetry was his final work.
