Hans Belting

Hans Belting taught at the universities of Heidelberg and Munich and at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, which he co-founded in 1992. In 2003, he held the European Chair at the Collège de France in Paris. From 2004 to 2007, he directed the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna. His best-known works include “Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art,” “The End of the History of Art,” “Florence and Baghdad,” and “Faces.” His books have been translated into ten languages. Belting was a member of the Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts.
