Friederike Hausmann (born 1945) studied history and classical philology, or Latin, in Berlin and earned a doctorate in history. She worked as a secondary-school teacher and spent several years in Italy, where she began translating Italian texts. Her publications include *Garibaldi: The Story of an Adventurer Who Helped Unite Italy* (1987), *A Short History of Italy from 1943 to the Present* (1997), and *The German Anarchists of Chicago, or Why America Does Not Know May Day* (1998).
