Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936 to a family of Italian immigrants and died in 2025. He entered the Jesuit order in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1969. After becoming an auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992, he served as its archbishop from 1998 to 2013 and was made a cardinal in 2001. On March 13, 2013, he was elected Bishop of Rome and the 266th pope of the Catholic Church. He was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to hold the office. His books include The Name of God Is Mercy, Our Father and Let Us Dream.
