Etel Adnan (1925–2021) was a writer and painter born in Beirut. She studied philosophy in Paris and continued her education in the United States from 1955, where she later taught humanities and philosophy. From 1972, she worked in Beirut as a cultural editor for the newspaper Al-Safa. Adnan published numerous literary works, including prose, poetry, and essays, alongside an independent body of paintings. Her painting gained wider international recognition through her participation in documenta 13 in 2012. In 2021, she received the Lichtwark Prize from the city of Hamburg. She died in Paris on November 14, 2021.
