Erwin Wickert

Erwin Wickert (1915–2008) was a German writer and diplomat. He studied art history and philosophy in Berlin and Heidelberg, and economics and political science in the United States. During the Second World War, he served in the German Foreign Service in Shanghai and Tokyo. After a period as a writer, he returned to diplomatic service in 1955. His best-known publications include the books on China “China von innen gesehen” (1982) and “Der fremde Osten” (1988), as well as the memoir “Mut und Übermut” (1991).
