Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) was a Swedish writer and one of the defining authors of children’s literature. She was born in Småland and died in Stockholm. Her best-known works include Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, The Children of Noisy Village, Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter, and The Brothers Lionheart, many of which are regarded as classics. In addition to writing, Lindgren worked for more than 24 years as an editor for children’s books at a publishing house. She also advocated for children’s rights, equality, and animal welfare. Her awards included the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
