Ali Smith

Ali Smith (born 1962 in Inverness, Scotland) is a Scottish writer. She has published numerous novels and collections of short stories. She received the 2005 Whitbread Award for *The Accidental*. Her novel *How to Be Both* won, among other honors, the Costa Novel Award, the Saltire Society Literary Book of the Year Award, the Goldsmiths Prize and the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. *Summer* received the Orwell Prize. Smith is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015. In 2022, she received the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.
