Abhijit V. Banerjee (born 1961 in Mumbai) is an Indian economist. His career included a professorship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Together with Esther Duflo, he co-founded the Poverty Action Lab, which developed an international network for research on poverty and development. Banerjee received several awards for his work on poverty reduction, including the Bernhard Harms Prize from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in 2014. In 2019, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with Duflo and Michael Kremer.
