THE INSTANT BESTSELLER • An indelible portrait of girls, the women they become, and that moment in life when everything can go horribly wrongONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, NPR, The Guardian, Entertainment Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle, Financial Times, Esquire, Newsweek, Vogue, Glamour, People, The Huffington Post, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Time Out, BookPage, Publishers Weekly, SlateNorthern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence.Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize • Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Award • Shortlisted for The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize • The New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice • Emma Cline—One of Granta’s Best of Young American NovelistsPraise for The Girls“Spellbinding . . . a seductive and arresting coming-of-age story.”—The New York Times Book Review“Extraordinary . . .

3.8/5 ⭐️ this is actually a very good book but some things could’ve been fleshed out more whilst other parts were too slow for my liking. (still was intriguing and enjoyable)

One of the books I can’t really decide if I like it or hate it. When I started reading the book I was a 100% sure I would adore it. I love nothing more than a woman narrator talking about her feelings and thoughts about the world and everything around her. If it’s around the Woodstock times back in the days, even better. First of all I have to say, that if you don’t like the style of jumping around in the plot from one incident to the other and back and forth again, you’ll absolutely hate this book. BUT I hate it as well and this is the very first book where it didn’t bother me at all. Fantastic author. But I have to say I had to push trough the book at a lot of passages not because it’s not well written! The writing style is one of the best I read so far, but because of the boring and predictable plot. I think there was a lot more potential to this book and the superb author could have done it better. I think with this book you either hate it or love it. I can’t decide (at least not for now) therefore 3 stars.
