Werner Schmitz, born in Cologne in 1953, was a German literary translator. He studied economics and received his diploma in 1977. After making his first attempts at literary translation in 1975, he worked as a full-time translator from 1981 onward. His German translations included works by John le Carré, Ernest Hemingway, Philip Roth, Paul Auster, Don DeLillo, Malcolm Lowry, and Herman Melville. His awards included the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize in 2011, the Lower Saxony Translator’s Prize, and the translation prize at the Linz Book Fair in 2008.
