Paul Auster (1947–2024) was an American writer, filmmaker, translator, and editor. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he studied English and comparative literature at Columbia University. After graduating, he spent several years in France and worked as a translator and editor of French literature. He gained international recognition with the experimental New York Trilogy and the novel In the Country of Last Things. His widely acclaimed body of work includes numerous novels, essays, and poems, as well as translations of contemporary poetry. In 2006, he received the Prince of Asturias Award.
