Walter Trier

Walter Trier (1890–1951) was born in Prague. He studied at the city’s School of Applied Arts and Academy of Art, and later in Munich under Franz von Stuck. He worked as a cartoonist and illustrator in Berlin, contributing to publications including Simplicissimus, Jugend, Lustige Blätter and the Ullstein publishing house. He became particularly well known for illustrating Erich Kästner’s children’s books. In 1936, Trier fled the Nazi regime. After periods in London and Toronto, he settled in Collingwood, Ontario, where he died in 1951.
