Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977) was a Russian-American writer, translator, and literary scholar. Born in St. Petersburg, he emigrated with his family to Western Europe after the October Revolution. From 1919 to 1922, he studied Russian and French literature at Cambridge. He subsequently lived in Berlin, where he began publishing literary works, mostly under the pseudonym W. Sirin. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he continued his writing career in the United States. He became internationally known above all for his novel “Lolita,” whose publication provoked heated critical debate. Nabokov died in Switzerland in 1977.
