Virginie Despentes, born in 1969 in Nancy, is a French writer, filmmaker, and feminist. She gained recognition in France in the mid-1990s with her debut novel, »Baise-moi«; its film adaptation, which she co-directed, brought the work wider attention in the German-speaking world. Her novel »Apocalypse Baby« received the Prix Renaudot in 2010. With the »Vernon Subutex« trilogy, she established herself as a major voice in French literature. In 2016, she was elected to the Académie Goncourt.
