Victor Serge (1890–1947) was born in Brussels to Russian émigré parents. As an anarchist activist, he spent five years in a Paris prison. After the Russian Revolutions, he worked as a publicist for the Comintern and was an early critic of Soviet power politics. After periods in Berlin and Vienna, he was expelled from the Communist Party, arrested, and sent to the Gulag. In 1936, following international protests, he was allowed to emigrate.
