Toine Heijmans

Toine Heijmans was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1969. He studied history and worked as a journalist for several Dutch daily newspapers. He also worked as a columnist for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. After publishing several collections of reportage, he made his fiction debut in 2011 with Op zee, published in English as The Sea, and in German as Irrfahrt. The sailing novel was translated into numerous languages, adapted for film, and awarded the French Prix Médicis étranger. His other novels include Pristina, Der unendliche Gipfel and Zuurstofschuld. He has received several literary and journalism prizes and was appointed to France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
