Thomas Witulski, born in 1964, studied Protestant theology, philosophy and history in Münster. He received a doctorate in theology in 1998, completed his habilitation in 2005, and earned a doctorate in ancient history in 2012. From 2009 onward, he served as a substitute professor for the chair of Biblical Theology and its didactics at Bielefeld University. He also worked as a pastor in the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
