Terry Pratchett (1948–2015) was an English author best known for his humorous fantasy novels. In 1983, he published “The Colour of Magic,” the first novel in his Discworld series, which ultimately comprised more than 40 books and was set in a world carried by four elephants standing on a giant turtle. Recurring characters include Rincewind, Death, the witches and the City Watch. Pratchett was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and was knighted in 2009 for services to literature. He received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010 and the Carnegie Medal in 2011 for “The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents.”
