Sybille Moser-Ernst studied mathematics, French literature, art history, history, and philosophy. In 1984, she completed her studies with a dissertation on the painter Franz Richard Unterberger. In 2001, she obtained her university teaching qualification in art history with a study of Albrecht Altdorfer. She held various positions at the Department of Art History at the University of Innsbruck, where she later served as an associate professor. As a postdoctoral scholar, she worked with Sir Ernst H. Gombrich at the Warburg Institute of the University of London.
