Markus Neuwirth, born in Innsbruck in 1960, is an Austrian art historian. He studied art history, psychology and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck, where he received his doctorate in 1987. He subsequently worked as a research assistant, art critic and interim head of the East Asia and Islam department at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, before returning to the University of Innsbruck’s Institute of Art History. His research focuses include Classicism, the early reception of Asia in Europe and Japanese art. In 2000 he completed his habilitation in Innsbruck with the study “Ästhetik des Staunens”; he also taught in Vienna and was a visiting professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
