Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a British physician and writer. After studying medicine, he initially practised as a doctor before devoting increasing attention to literature. He became world-famous for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson. His other works include the adventure novel The Lost World, featuring Professor Challenger. Doyle also wrote historical and science-related novels, crime fiction, and non-fiction. In 1902, he was knighted for his engagement in the South African Boer War. During his later years, he became deeply involved in spiritualism.
