Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was an American writer known primarily for his socially critical and satirical novels. He studied at Yale and worked as a journalist and editor before the success of his novel “Main Street” enabled him to live from his writing. In 1926, he declined the Pulitzer Prize awarded to him for “Arrowsmith.” In 1930, he became the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
