Serhij Zhadan (born 1974 in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine) is a Ukrainian writer and poet. He studied German and earned a doctorate on Ukrainian Futurism. He made his literary debut at the age of 17 and published numerous poetry collections and works of prose, including “The Invention of Jazz in the Donbas,” “Mesopotamia” and “The Orphanage.” For “The Invention of Jazz in the Donbas,” he received the Jan Michalski Prize and the 2014 Brücke Berlin Prize, together with Juri Durkot and Sabine Stöhr. In 2022, he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
