Serhii Plokhy (born 1957) is a historian specializing in Ukrainian and Eastern European history. His academic career includes a professorship in Ukrainian history at Harvard University and the directorship of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. He is the author of numerous books, including “The Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union” (2014), “Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy” (2018), and “The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine” (2022). “The Last Empire” received the Lionel Gelber Prize, and “Chernobyl” was awarded the Baillie Gifford Prize.
