Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1947 and is an Indian-British writer. He studied history at Cambridge. Before devoting himself fully to literature, he worked as a journalist, copywriter and in the theatre. His first novel, »Grimus«, was published in 1975; he became internationally known with »Midnight’s Children« (1981), which won the Booker Prize. His major works also include »The Satanic Verses« and »Haroun and the Sea of Stories«. Rushdie received the European Union’s Aristeion Prize for Literature in 1996, was knighted in 2007 and made an honorary member of the German PEN Centre in 2022. In 2023, he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
