Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger

Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (born 1951 in Minden, Germany) is a German lawyer and FDP politician. She studied law in Göttingen and Bielefeld and was a member of the German Bundestag from 1990 to 2013. She served as Federal Minister of Justice from 1992 to 1996 and again from 2009 to 2013. In 1996, she resigned from the office in protest against the so-called “Großer Lauschangriff,” or major eavesdropping operation. In 2007, she successfully brought a constitutional complaint against Germany’s data-retention law together with Gerhart Baum and Burkhard Hirsch. In 2018, she was appointed the state of North Rhine-Westphalia’s commissioner for combating antisemitism. Her honors include the 2015 Data Protection Award and the 2016 Max Friedlaender Prize.
