Roger Caillois

Roger Caillois (1913–1978) was a French sociologist, philosopher, literary critic, and literary theorist. His work brought together interests in the natural sciences and the humanities. Initially associated with the Surrealists, he later helped found the Collège de sociologie. His best-known works include The Man and the Sacred (1939) and Man, Play and Games (1958). As an editor and publisher, he helped introduce French readers to writers including Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, and Miguel Ángel Asturias. Caillois was a member of the Académie française and received several distinctions, including the Grand Prix national des Lettres.
