Georges Bataille

Georges Bataille (1897–1962) was a French writer, essayist, and librarian. From 1922 he worked at various libraries, including the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, where he remained until 1942. Associated with the Surrealist milieu, he contributed to the journal Documents. In 1936, he co-founded the Collège de Sociologie with Michel Leiris and Roger Caillois. In 1946, he founded the journal Critique, which he edited until his death. Bataille wrote novels and stories as well as cultural-critical and political essays.
