Renate Schmidgall

Renate Schmidgall, born in Heilbronn in 1955, is a German translator of Polish literature. She studied Slavic and German literature at Heidelberg University and worked as a research associate at the German Poland Institute from 1990 to 1996. From 1996 onward, she worked as a freelance literary translator. Her translations include works by Paweł Huelle, Stefan Chwin, Andrzej Stasiuk, Hanna Krall, Wisława Szymborska, and Adam Zagajewski, among others. Her awards include the Jane Scatcherd Prize in 2001, the Karl Dedecius Prize in 2009, and the Johann Heinrich Voß Prize of the German Academy for Language and Literature in 2017.
