Ram Dass (Richard Alpert, 1931–2019) was an American psychology professor and spiritual teacher. At Harvard University, he conducted research on psychedelic substances with Timothy Leary. During a trip to India in the late 1960s, he met the spiritual teacher Neem Karoli Baba, who gave him the name Ram Dass. His best-known books include Be Here Now (1971), Still Here (2000), and Be Love Now. Through his books and lectures, he became an influential interpreter of Indian spirituality in the West.
