Plato (c. 428/427 BC, Athens – c. 348/347 BC, Athens) was an ancient Greek philosopher and a student of Socrates. After Socrates’ death, he travelled and later founded the Academy in Athens, one of the earliest institutions devoted to systematic philosophical education. In dialogues including the “Phaedo,” “Symposium,” and “Politeia” (“The Republic”), he explored questions of knowledge, ethics, love, justice, and the ideal state. Aristotle was among his students. His theory of Forms and his use of dialogue had a lasting influence on the development of Western philosophy.
