Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768–1834) was a Protestant theologian, philosopher, educator, and clergyman. He worked chiefly in Halle and Berlin and had a major influence on modern Protestantism. As a scholar, preacher, and translator, he translated, among other works, Plato’s writings into German. He is also regarded as a founder of modern hermeneutics.
