Michael Erler (born 1953 in Cologne) is a German classical philologist. He studied Classical Philology, philosophy, mathematics and physics at the University of Cologne, where he received his doctorate in 1977. He completed his habilitation at the University of Konstanz in 1985. After teaching positions and a professorship in Classical Philology with a focus on Latin at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, he moved to Würzburg, where he taught Classical Philology with a focus on Greek. From 2019, he was a senior professor and member of the board of the Siebold Collegium Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Würzburg. His research focuses on Greek literature, Greek and Roman philosophy, and the relationship between ancient literature and philosophy. In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
