Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BC–c. AD 17) was a Roman poet of classical antiquity. After studying rhetoric and briefly pursuing public service, he turned to poetry. His best-known works include the erotic collections *Amores* and *Ars amatoria*, the religious and mythological poem *Fasti*, and *Metamorphoses*, his major work. In AD 8, Emperor Augustus ordered Ovid’s exile to Tomis on the Black Sea. Ovid continued writing there, including the poems later collected as *Tristia*, and died in exile.
