Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931) was an Austrian writer and physician. Born in Vienna, he studied medicine, earned a doctorate, and initially worked as a doctor and as his father’s assistant before devoting himself increasingly—and entirely from 1894 onward—to literature. A major representative of Viennese modernism, he portrayed the society of turn-of-the-century Vienna in dramas and prose marked by psychological insight. His best-known works include the dramatic cycle »Anatol«, »Reigen«, »Lieutenant Gustl«, »Fräulein Else«, and »Dream Story« (»Traumnovelle«). During his lifetime, Schnitzler was among the most frequently performed German-language dramatists.
