Mia Couto

Born in 1955 in Beira, Mozambique, to Portuguese immigrants, Mia Couto is a Mozambican writer. He writes in Portuguese and is regarded as a major author of Portuguese-speaking Africa. Before pursuing his literary career, he worked for several years as a journalist and editor-in-chief of the newspapers Tempo and Notícias de Maputo. He began publishing in 1983 and has written novels, short stories, and poetry. His notable works include his debut novel Sleepwalking Land. His literary honors include the Prémio Camões in 2013 and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2014.
