Matthias Drobinski (born 1964) studied history, Catholic theology and German studies in Giessen and Mainz before completing journalistic training at the Henri-Nannen School in Hamburg. After working for Publik-Forum, Die Woche and public broadcasters, he was an editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 1997 to 2021, focusing mainly on churches and religious communities. In his journalism, he covered the papacies of John Paul II and Benedict XVI and reported on Pope Francis. From 2021, he worked again for Publik-Forum, serving as editor-in-chief from September 2022.
