Maarten ’t Hart was born in 1944 in Maassluis, the Netherlands, near Rotterdam. He studied biology, specializing in behavioral biology, in Leiden and worked there for 18 years as a lecturer in behavioral research before establishing himself as a freelance writer. He published his first novel in 1971. His extensive body of work includes novels, short stories, and essays; it has been translated into several languages, and some of his books have been adapted for film. Among his best-known works is the novel The Fury of the Whole World, which was published in German in 1997 and achieved major success.
