Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was a French-American artist. She created sculptures, installations, paintings, and prints, addressing subjects including the body, sexuality, security, dependence, the unconscious, and death. Her best-known works include the monumental spider sculpture “Maman” and the “Cell” installations. “Maman” is a tribute to her mother, who worked as a tapestry restorer. Bourgeois lived and worked in New York from 1938 onward. In 1982, the Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated a retrospective to her. She died in New York in 2010.
