Lewis Grassic Gibbon (1901–1935) was the pen name of the Scottish writer James Leslie Mitchell. Born near Auchterless in Aberdeenshire to a farm labourer, he left school at sixteen and initially worked as a journalist. He later served as an administrative clerk with the military authorities, stationed in the Middle East, India and Egypt. During this period he began writing short stories, novels and books about exploration and explorers. As a writer, he was active in left-wing political journalism. Works published in German include “Szenen aus Schottland” and “Lied vom Abendrot”.
