Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) was an English painter and writer. She met Max Ernst in Paris in the 1930s and lived with him until 1940. As an artist, she was associated with the Surrealist movement and was also in contact with André Breton and Joan Miró. During the Second World War, she fled via Spain and the United States to Mexico, arriving there in 1942. Her paintings were exhibited in Paris and Amsterdam from 1938 onward and later internationally. As a writer, she became particularly associated with fantastic literature. Her posthumously published book *The Milk of Dreams* provided the title and theme for the 2022 Venice Biennale.
