Klaus Detlef Olof was born in Lübeck. He worked as a translator from the South Slavic languages and was a professor at the universities of Klagenfurt and Graz until 2005. The authors he translated include France Prešeren, Miroslav Krleža, Zoran Ferić, Drago Jančar, and Goran Vojnović. In 1991, he received the Austrian State Prize for Literary Translation.
