Karl Ristikivi

Karl Ristikivi (1912–1977) was an Estonian writer. Born in Uue-Varbla in Livonia, he studied geography at the University of Tartu and began publishing stories and short fiction in Estonian newspapers during his studies. He first became known for children’s books and family novels, which are often grouped as the “Tallinn Trilogy.” In 1944, during the second Soviet occupation, he fled Estonia to Sweden, where he continued his literary work in exile. Among his notable novels is The Night of the Souls (1953), a work associated with Western literary modernism.
