Karl-Josef Kuschel (born 1948), Dr. theol., was Professor of Theology of Culture and Interreligious Dialogue at the University of Tübingen from 1995 to 2013. He also served as co-director of the university’s Institute for Ecumenical and Interreligious Research. He published numerous books on religion, literature, society and interreligious dialogue, including Rilke und der Buddha, Martin Buber – seine Herausforderung an das Christentum, and studies of Heinrich Heine and Theodor Heuss. His positions included membership of the board of trustees of the Foundation Weltethos, the board responsible for awarding the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and the presidency of the International Hermann Hesse Society.
