Volker Michels (born 1943 in Villingen) is a German editor and literary scholar. After studying medicine and psychology, he joined Suhrkamp and Insel in 1969 as an editor of German literature, where he worked for almost four decades. He published numerous editions of authors from the eighteenth to the twentieth century and edited works by, among others, Ernst Weiß, Robert Walser, and Stefan Zweig. His main focus was the writings, letters, and visual legacy of Hermann Hesse, which he presented in numerous thematic volumes and a multivolume collected edition. In Offenbach, Michels established a Hermann Hesse editorial archive and, in 1990, designed the Hesse Museum in Calw. In 2013, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf awarded him an honorary doctorate.
